Why Early-stage Investors Tend to Trust Their Gut
New research conducted by management professors Laura Huang at Wharton Business School and Jone L. Pearce at University of California, Irvine investigates entrepreneurial investment decision-making under extreme uncertainty. They found that angel investors rely more heavily on expertise-based intuition, or 'gut feel', than on formal analysis when making investment decisions. The authors argue that this emphasis on intuition, while contrary to theory and practice in other investment contexts, is a result of unique characteristics of early-stage investing wherein uncertainty is so extreme that it risks are unknowable.
