The Mistakes We Make When Giving to Charity
Recent research conducted by Dr. Benartzi, professor and co-head of the behavioral decision-making group at UCLA Anderson School of Management, and Dr. Olivola, assistant professor of marketing at Carnegie Mellon, highlights three biases that limit our generosity when making decisions on whether and how much to donate to charity. The first is the "martyrdom effect", which accounts for our observed preference for forms of giving that involve significant sacrifice and challenge. The second is the "other-nothing neglect", which describes our tendency to think asymmetrically about tradeoff's between selfish and selfless outcomes. The third is "the unexpected joy of giving", which shows we are happier than we think we'd be after acts of charity.
