Article of the Week
Localized natural disasters can hurt an entire country's economy
Researchers at the Kellogg School at Northwestern and the University of Cambridge teamed up with economists from Japan's Ministry of Finance and Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry to create a supply chain model that predicts the effects of a regional shock (such as a natural disaster) to a company's supply chain. Their model demonstrated the upstream and downstream impacts of an event like the 2011 earthquake on a company's supply chain, quantifying the losses suffered by quake-impacted firms. The researchers posit that such models will help policymakers understand the ripple effects of natural disasters, thereby helping them plan for regional financial recovery.
