Article of the Week
Music training strengthens children's brains, decision-making network
Neuroscientists at the University of Southern California's Brain and Creativity Institute (BCI) recently published two studies describing results from a longitudinal study of underserved children living in various neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Some of the children received musical instruction through Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, some were involved in a community sports program, and a control group did not participate in any specific after-school activities. The study revealed that children receiving musical instruction showed increased thickness and volume in brain regions associated with auditory processing. They also showed stronger neural connectivity in the corpus callosum, which is the part of the brain that facilitates communication between the left and right hemispheres. Assal Habibi, the study's lead author, stated that these findings "suggest that musical training is a powerful intervention that could help children mature emotionally and intellectually."
